Stay Grounded/Element Earth

Basic Attributes: Solid, practical, steady, fertile, manifesting, feminine, sensual

Imagine standing outside barefoot with your feet connecting to the earth. What kind of ground comes to mind for you? Is it a warm, sandy beach? Or a cool, grassy lawn? Maybe it’s wet mud that squishes between your toes, or a dry and cracked clay that leaves your feet coated with orange dust.

Does it delight you when you imagine this or make you want to run inside and put on shoes? Connecting with the element of Earth requires you to get a little dirty, whether it’s by using your hands to garden or mold pottery, or full-out mud wrestling. Earth offers you the opportunity to reconnect sensually – through taste, touch, sight, smell, and sound – to the world around you. In doing so, you have the chance to feel – not with your emotions, but with your senses. Doing this is important because it snaps you back into awareness of the physical part of Nature that is all around you all of the time. You are as much a part of your physical body as you allow yourself to feel connected to it.

The element of Earth represents the energy of being present in the material world, where one is able to manifest the intangible into the tangible, the immaterial into the material. Earth is a feminine element, meaning it is receptive and often waits for energy to come to it rather than initiating action. In Tarot, Earth is represented by Pentacles (Diamonds in a regular deck of cards).

Earth signs typically are slow to change (especially Taurus) and like to feel decisions have practical bases and results. Creativity is founded in actual creation – bringing an idea into some real form, ie., growing food or flowers in a garden, woodworking, or writing laws and upholding them.

Astrologically, Earth takes the form of:

Taurus (ruled by Venus, fixed quality): making money & acquiring material possessions; enjoying anything sensually pleasurable; nurturing new growth into fruitfulness; slow-moving & steady, reticent to change

Virgo (ruled by Mercury, mutable quality): working with your hands to create from imagination or instructions down to the smallest detail; preoccupation with perfection; critical of self and others; concern for physical health, particularly digestive health; creates polite, friendly interactions with others

Capricorn (ruled by Saturn, cardinal quality): setting up a structure within which others work, such as a CEO forming a corporation, a father financially providing for his family, a government establishing a set of laws to protect and contain the people within it’s system; cautious, which can be perceived as cold and aloof in interpersonal interactions; witty.

“And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.”  ~ The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran
